Arrest of Stephen F. Austin
SFA traveled to Mexico City to discuss reform of Texas with Santa Anna He wrote a letter telling Texan leaders to draft a State Constitution for Texas because he thought Santa Anna would grant separate statehood After declining Texas statehood, Santa Anna found the letter. SFA was arrested and placed in prison for over a year, but never charged with a crime SFA Santa Anna

Texans Declare War After Austin’s arrest, Santa Anna abolished all federalist policies and named himself dictator of a “Centralist” Mexico Upon his release from prison, SFA returned to Texas and explained he had lost all hope for peace. Texas’ only recourse was war.
