Use a Semicolon When… You are combining two independent clauses without using a conjunction Independent clauses pass the “I know that” test Conjunctions = FANBOYS I would like to go to the shoe store; sparkly purple shoes are on sale.

Use a Semicolon When… You have two independent clauses joined by a conjunctive adverb or transitional expression Commonly used Transitional Expressions As a result In spite of For example For instance In fact Commonly used Conjunctive Adverbs Accordingly However Also Nevertheless Indeed Next Otherwise furthermore For more of these see pg 724

Use a Semicolon When… You are joining two independent clauses that contain commas with a conjunction I like to eat pizza, pasta, and potatoes; but Jane likes to eat eggplant, tomatoes, and artichokes. You have several items in a series that contain commas Before I turn 30, I would like to visit Paris, France; Orlando, Florida; and Las Vegas, Nevada. **Practice makes perfect ;)… Complete Ex 1 and 2 on pg 725 and 727!

Use a Colon… Literally after the word “follows” or “following” The criteria for this assignment are as follows: introductory paragraph, strong support, and clever concluding thoughts Do NOT put colons between verbs/prepositions and their objects! Yesterday I cleaned: the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living room. My cat likes to sit on top of: the mantle, couch, and cabinets

Use a Colon… Before a long, formal statement or quotation
Generally for quotes longer than four lines (they are separated out anyway…) When explaining or clarifying a preceding statement Eggplants are awesome: They can be roasted, fried, or sautéed. Notice the capitalization!
