2. Today’s goals
To understand the Library of Congress classification system and how to use the online catalog to find books in the library related to immigrant culture and specific immigrant groups.
To learn what an academic databases is and how to use our databases to find information, especially Gale Biography in Context to find important U.S. immigrants.
To learn how to find images online for your presentations.
To learn how to make copies or print all sources in order to highlight and annotate.
To work on the Library Workshop Assignment, and prepare for your portfolio and group presentation by finding at least four library (academic) sources— NO Google sources except for images and blank maps.

5. Call Numbers What is a call number?
The address of the book, found on its spine label.
Public libraries and K-12 school libraries use the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize books by topic into 10 main categories identified by numbers (000s-900s).
Academic libraries use the Library of Congress (LOC) Classification System.
Also organized by topic.
More than 10 categories, and uses letters instead of numbers.
More information given on call number.
Demonstrate with real book.

Book title: Uncensored War: The Media and Vietnam Author: Daniel C. Hallin Call Number: DS H **Make sure to write the Call Number down to locate a book on the shelves.
The first two lines describe the subject of the book. DS = Vietnamese Conflict
1st find letters alphabetically, then numbers in numerical order.
The third line often represents the author's last name. H = Hallin
Read the letter alphabetically, and the number as a decimal. (.35)
The last line represents the date of publication/ copyright date.
Arranged in chronological order.

Use Basic “Title begins with” search when know title of book
Use Basic “Subject begins with” search to find other books on your topic
Do a “title begins with” search for “Makers of America” from their resource list. Talk about collection, call number, status, and citation information.
Do a “subject begins with” search for “Asian American”. Show subtopics—especially biography related—and “Asian Americans” below and second page. Use “Asian Americans—Social conditions” to show how to limit results and use e-books.
For e-book, show search within—search “Vietnamese Americans”.

Databases are searchable collections of reliable, vetted resources, like encyclopedias, magazines, academic journals, and newspapers.
Not part of the visible Internet—Google doesn’t have access to these articles.
