How? Joint Stock Companies:
Investors would buy “shares” of a company and this money would help build the colonies. Investors hoped to make money off the success of the colonies.

The Lost Colony After establishing the colony, Gov. John White returned to England to get additional supplies in 1587. Because of the ongoing war with the Spanish, White was unable to return until 1590. Upon his return, all 117 men and women had vanished from the colony. What was left was a carving in a tree which read “CROATOAN”

Early Forms of Government in the Colonies
After Jamestown was beginning to flourish from the sale of tobacco, the colony was in need of government The Virginia Company created the Virginia House of Burgesses

Virginia House of Burgesses
The House of Burgesses became the first representative government in North America The people of Jamestown elected officials who would serve on the House of Burgesses The Legislative body was created by the Virginia Company in hopes of bringing more people to the colony

Massachusetts Bay Colony
Created by a large group of Puritans who were seeking religious freedom from England They too created their own government led by Puritan religious leaders Settled in New England in 1628

City Upon a Hill Upon creating their colony, Puritan leader John Winthrop said their colony should be a “City Upon a Hill” He believed that their colony should serve as a model for future colonies

Puritans Puritan values of Massachusetts Bay led to the creation of systems of self government Additionally, Puritans believed it was your duty on earth to work in order to repay God for your sins

Roger Williams Unlike the leaders of the Massachusetts Bay colony, Roger Williams believed in the separation of church and state His ideas challenged the leaders of the colony which eventually led to his banishment from the colony

Anne Hutchinson Another citizen of the Massachusetts Bay colony who challenged the religious leadership of the colony She slandered many of the Puritan leaders and held home prayers She too was eventually banished from Massachusetts Bay

Rhode Island Williams and Hutchinson went on to establish Rhode Island in 1636 Purpose of the colony was to provide a place for religious freedom
