Be sexually abstinent. Engage in behaviors that prevent or reduce sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection. Utilize appropriate health services to promote sexual health.

Summarize how HIV is transmitted. Describe symptoms of HIV. Summarize the long-term physical consequences of HIV. Analyze the HIV risk of a variety of behaviors. Summarize how to prevent or reduce the risk of HIV. Explain why it is safe to be a friend of someone who has HIV.

5 What is HIV? HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus.
It is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS stands for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. HIV lives in the semen, vaginal fluids, blood, and breast milk of a person with HIV. It can be passed from one person to another through these infected fluids. HIV damages the body’s immune system. Over time, the body can no longer fight off other diseases and infections.

6 HIV Quiz –Fact or Myth Turn to page 18 in your student workbook.
Read the statement about HIV and decide whether each statement is a fact or a myth. Write fact or myth in the line in front of the statement.

7 Summary HIV is passed through infected blood, semen, and vaginal fluids. People do not get HIV from day-to-day contact. You can not tell if someone has HIV. People with HIV may have flu-like symptoms when they are first infected. You can protect yourself from HIV.

8 Drinking alcohol or using other drugs isn’t a sexual activity.
Why does drinking alcohol or using other drugs carry some risk for HIV?

9 Summary Alcohol and other drugs use lower a person’s inhibitions and ability to make decisions. People who are drunk or high are more likely to do things that could put them at risk for HIV, as well as other STD and unintended pregnancy.

10 Work with a partner to list 3 things you learned in this lesson.
