Creation of the United Nations
I. Purpose – to maintain peace between member nations, encourage cooperation and replace the League of Nations A. April 25, 1945 – 50 nations meet in San Francisco to draft UN Charter B. Headquartered in NYC

C. Two main bodies of UN are the Security Council and General
Assembly (which now has 150 members) 1. Security Council – investigates diplomatic, political and military disputes; peacekeeping and emergencies; had 11 (now 15) members. Five permanent members are Great Britain, China, France, US, and Russia – they all had to agree on decisions. 2. General Assembly – policy making arm of UN has reps from all nations. III. UN had trouble deciding what to do about Europe after
the wars. They had different goals: A. US and Great Britain wanted to build democracies all over the world. They wanted to help Western Germany get back on its feet. B. Soviet Union wanted to draw a line along Eastern Europe to keep themselves safe- a buffer zone. This would give Stalin (Russia) control of 100 million more people as Communists.

Successes of the UN: Wrote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – preserved basic freedoms for individuals, creates a common standard for all people. B. Set up UNESCO, WHO, FAO and UNICEF to help battle hunger, disease and fight for literacy for all people.
