Biomass Energy By: Kobe Egnor & Tayshome’ Pondexter

2 Description: Essentially Biomass is biological material derived
from living or recently deceased organisms. Typically from plants but can come from animals Renewable source of energy For the most part a eco friendly choice The main by-products are the release of Co2 Biomass is burned in a boiler, to produce energy (normally steam or hot water boilers)

3 Uses: They vary based on the vegetation and or life form it’s derived from. Some biomass can be turned into biofuels Biofuels have a huge amount of potential The key principles if burning, it etc., to release the energy within it Biomass can be used to create electricity Holds high energy density 5 types Virgin wood Energy Crops Agricultural Residues Food Waste Industrial waste and co -products

4 5 types of Biomass Virgin wood:
-anything relating to forestry and arboriculture Energy Crops: -sizeable yields for the sole purpose of energy Agricultural Residues: -leftovers from agricultural and their processes Food Waste: -consumer waste, company preparation, processing, and manufacturing Industrial waste and co -products: -manufacturing and processing in general

5 Goal: The main goal of biomass energy is to drastically reduce the carbon emissions associated with burning fossil fuels. It can also contribute to reducing the greenhouse effect by lowering the production of greenhouse gases. This type of energy helps to prevent and minimize global warming.

6 Worldwide Impact: Burning biomass for energy emits large amounts of air pollution and endangers human health worldwide. Biomass burning produces tons of fine particulate matter (PM), a pollutant associated with asthma, heart disease, and cancer. Biomass energy wastes water and pollutes rivers. A large-scale biomass plant requires close to a million gallons of water a day for the cooling process. This water is taken from nearby rivers.

7 Environmental Impact Potentially could be unsustainable
In addition energy may come from uncertified sources High water usage Which could definitively be a problem in low water areas Affects air quality Varies based on the biomass it’s made from Deforestation Maintaining a solid balance, between usage and restoration of the resource will be essential

8 How It Is Mass Produced, Delivered, And Used:
Many different kinds of biomass are used to produce electricity. Some types can be converted into liquid fuels called biofuels that can power cars, trucks, and tractors. Biomass energy can be transported in many different ways such as in a bag( Domestic sizes kg), on a ship( Suitable for long distance bulk transport of non time-sensitive material), and by a rail( Suitable for power stations with dedicated biomass combustion, or co-firing). Biomass is organic material which has stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy. Biomass fuels include wood, wood waste, straw, manure, sugarcane, and many other byproducts from a variety of agricultural processes.

9 Advantages: Biomass can be used as a fuel, lessening the use of fossil fuels(production of heat, steam, and electricity- residential) Always available, plus its renewable Can be made from agriculture waste Produce oxygen and uses CO2 Uses waste material in landfills, making room Reduced moneys spent on foreign oil

10 Disadvantages: Land will be used for energy crops Lacks the enough research to reduce productions cost, significantly Can’t use agricultural waste, if the basic crop isn’t available
