6 Why a New Wireless Standard?
May 2002 doc.: IEEE /193r0 November 2002 Why a New Wireless Standard? No previous wireless standard has been optimized for multimedia. WiFi, Bluetooth and others include core (MAC & PHY) optimizations for their respective target markets. Multimedia needs to have (spec. & implementation): advanced QoS low cost (low complexity) simplicity of use long battery life adequate data rate and spatial capacity a scalable security platform etc. Dr. John R. Barr, Motorola & Glyn Roberts, ST Microelectronics John Barr, Motorola

7 WiMedia’s Goals Promote wireless multimedia connectivity.
May 2002 doc.: IEEE /193r0 November 2002 WiMedia’s Goals Promote wireless multimedia connectivity. Leverage standards-based technologies: IEEE & 15.3a will be the starting point. Adopt evolving wireless multimedia technologies as they emerge. Establish a certification and logo program. Support development of any necessary higher layer protocols and software specifications. Liaison with key organizations (IEEE, Bluetooth, WECA, Cable Labs, DVB WIN, 1394TA, USB Forum, CPTWG and others.) Dr. John R. Barr, Motorola & Glyn Roberts, ST Microelectronics John Barr, Motorola
