1 Lighting the Way 4th Grade

2 Light But which light?

3 Driving Question What are the various types of light bulbs and how efficient are they? How do we decide which light bulbs will reduce our energy use in our home and/or school?

4 Essential Learning - Standards
Cross the Curriculum Standards 4.P.4A.1: Construct scientific arguments to support the claim that white light is made up of different colors. (The student will understand the properties of light and that it is a form of energy) 4.P.4A.2: Analyze and interpret data from observations and measurements to describe how the apparent brightness of light can vary as a result of the distance and intensity of the light source. 4.P.1: The student will use the science and engineering practices, including the processes and skills of scientific inquiry, to develop understandings of science content. Math: 4.MDA.4: Create a line plot to display a data set (i.e., generated by measuring length to the nearest quarter-inch and eighth-inch) and interpret the line plot. ELA: I.4: Synthesize information to share learning and/or take action. C.MC.1: Interact with others to explore ideas and concepts, communicate meaning, and develop logical interpretations through collaborative conversations; build upon the ideas of others to clearly express one’s own views while respecting diverse perspectives C.MC.2: Articulate ideas, claims, and perspectives in a logical sequence using information, findings, and credible evidence from sources. C.MC.3: Communicate information through strategic use of multiple modalities and multimedia to enrich understanding when presenting ideas and information.

5 Can you light a bulb? Engaging Scenario:

6 Comparing Light Bulbs From the NEED.org,
Students will explore which type of light bulbs are more or less energy efficient. Student will collect data to persuade their parents and classmates on which type of light bulb should they buy. Comparing Light Bulbs

7 Research and Presentations
Students will use classroom data and data from other sources to create a presentation to support their view on which light bulb is energy efficient. Projects could include: Commercials Powerpoint Letters to parents Research and Presentations

8 Parents will be invited to class presentations on which light bulb the students would try to persuade their parents to use in their home. Energy Cafe
