1 Bell Ringer: How do plants obtain food?
Photosynthesis Bell Ringer: How do plants obtain food?

2 You will be able to… Tell me the products and reactants of photosynthesis Say in what organelle photosynthesis occurs Explain adaptations of leaves that make them suited to carry out photosynthesis

3 Energy Recall that all living things require energy
Animals eat to get energy, but plants don’t eat. So where do they get their energy from?

4 Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process through which plants make their own food (sugar) from sunlight Sunlight + Carbon Dioxide + Water  Sugar + Oxygen

5 Chloroplasts Photosynthesis takes place in a special organelle called the chloroplast

6 Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are found mainly in the leaves of plants.
They contain a pigment called chlorophyll which is responsible for the green color of leaves

7 The Process Plants need Water, Carbon Dioxide and Sunlight to perform photosynthesis Sunlight provides the energy to split water molecules and create sugar

8 Leaves Each leaf is like a factory making sugar.
There are openings on the leaf to allow gases to come in and out called stomata.

9 The Leaves Veins send the sugars to the rest of the plant where it is needed Leaves are often broad and thin- thus they have lots of surface area for absorbing sunlight and less volume

10 BrainPop!

11 Learning Check Can you…?
1. Tell me the products and reactants of photosynthesis 2. Say in what organelle photosynthesis occurs 3. Explain adaptations of leaves that make them suited to carry out photosynthesis

12 Bell Ringer: write the equation for photosynthesis
Cell Respiration Bell Ringer: write the equation for photosynthesis

13 You will be able to… Tell me the reactants and products of cellular respiration Explain the difference between cell respiration and photosynthesis Tell me where cell respiration takes place Tell me why these processes are important

14 Energy Most animals eat. Plants make their own sugar.
But… what do they do with that food?

15 Cellular Respiration Cellular respiration is the process through which food is broken down into water and carbon dioxide to get energy Sugar + Oxygen  Carbon dioxide +Water + ATP (Energy)

16 Cellular Respiration ALL Eukaryotic cells do cellular respiration (so everything except bacteria) Even plants do cellular respiration (they do photosynthesis as well!)

17 Cellular Respiration This occurs in a special organelle called the mitochondria

18 What’s the difference? Cellular Respiration Photosynthesis
Provides energy for all cells (plant and animal) Makes food for plants

19 BrainPop!

20 Why does it matter? Oxygen and plants produce that for us through photosynthesis! In this Wall-E clip, pay attention to the plant’s role

21 Wall-E Writing Prompt Imagine you are writing for the future generations on board the Axiom ship. They may not know what plants are, but you do, and you know they will need some if they are ever to return to earth. Write a manual page explaining photosynthesis and cell respiration, how the two interact, and why they should try to find a plant. You may be as creative as you like.
