1. Lyrical Poetry
Objective: I will learn the origins, purpose and format of lyrical poetry

2. What is the origin?
In ancient Greece, when a chorus sang or spoke more personally and accompanied themselves on the lyre, the verse was called a lyric

3. What is a lyrical poem?
It is a poem that includes personal and individual emotion
It does not tell a story as does a narrative poem
Most poetry as we think of it is lyrical poetry

4. What are many subdivisions of lyrical poetry?
The song – is the weakest form because they do not achieve a true poetic level. This is due to the lack of poetic devices used.
The hymn – Is a spiritual form of lyrical poetry
The Elegy – Is a formal verse focusing on death or any other solemn subject

5. Continued….. Use lots of imagery, and think about rhythm Step 3:
If the poem has a chorus, make your point here. Let the chorus punctuate your feeling with a statement about what it means. You can repeat this over and over (refrain).
Note: you don’t have to use the music; however, it may help you formulate your thoughts.

6. Steps to Writing a Lyrical Poem
You need to think about a time of great emotion or personal growth
Make sure it is a snapshot, but don’t tell a complete story (remember that’s a narrative)
Write down this memory

Put these pieces of the memory into phrases
Do not write down complete sentences. Instead, let the broad ideas collide with details

7. Requirements You must use three sound devices
You must rewrite the lyrics through the second chorus OR if you do not have a song, write lines with a chorus that repeats twice.
