1 Review for Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
Vincent Eblacas Untalan Middle School SY 2017 to 2018

2 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are the 3 major factors that changes the Earth’s Surface? (15 points) Weathering----the breaking down of rock Erosion----wearing away of materials to create sediment Deposition---when sediments from erosion are put down into another area

3 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are the 4 major types of mass movement? (20 points) Landslide----when rocks and soil move quickly Mudslide---when water, rocks and soil move quickly Slump---when a section of land is moving downward creep—when a section of land is slowly moving downward

4 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are the 5 major features created by the flowing of rivers? (25 points) Meanders---the natural shifting of the river as materials are deposited or eroded oxbow lakes---forms as the meanders block off a section of the river Valleys---created as water wears away a section of land as it flows through it Waterfalls are when water goes from a higher elevation to a lower elevation in a relatively short distance flood plains

5 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are the 3 major features created by the deposition of rivers? (15 points) Alluvial fans are when the materials come down from the mountains and form what looks like a fan when viewed from above Deltas---are when materials are deposited at the mouth of a river flood plains---are the low flat areas that collect water.

6 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What is a major hazard that is created by ground water erosion? (5 points) Sinkholes are a major hazard created by groundwater erosion such as the one found by Two Lovers point in Upper Tumon.

7 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What is mass movement and runoff? (10 points) Mass movement deals with the movement of land runoff deals with how water moves stuff

8 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What 3 major factors affect erosion and sediment load? (15 points) Slope----the more steep the slope the faster the water will flow which speeds up erosion and increases sediment load volume of flow---moving water also increases erosion and sediment load streambed shape—a shallow and/or rocky bottom will slow down the water which will lower erosion and sediment load. Wider streams also lower erosion rate and sediment load which is why deltas are found at the mouth of rivers.

9 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What is turbulence? (5 points) Turbulence is the uneven flow of air or other material.

10 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are the 2 major types of glaciers? (10 points) Continental glaciers are huge sheets of ice that can grind down mountains and move a tremendous amount of materials. valley glaciers are smaller glaciers that can carve out valleys and other areas.

11 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are 3 major features created by glaciers? (15 points) Any three of these--- Horn---a peak on the mountain caused by the glaciers eroding rock Arete---a sharp ridge that separates two cirques Cirque—a bowl shaped hollow eroded by a glacier Fiord—when the level of the sea rises and fills in a valley glacial lake-created when ice melts and fill in a basin created by plucking and abrasion of a glacier u-shaped valley—when a glacier carves out a valley Moraine---forms when a glacier deposits material kettle lake—formed when a depression fills up with water. Drumlin—a long mound of till that is smoothed in the direction of the glacier’s flow.

12 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What are the 2 major ways waves can cause erosion? (10 points) By impact which is a direct hitting that causes things to break down and erode by abrasion which is when materials are dragged against each other to cause breakdown and erosion.

13 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
How does deflation work? (5 points) It works by wind picking up the top layer of soil which causes the overall level to go down.

14 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What is Loess? (5 points) Loess is the material in the wind when deflation is occurring.

15 Earth Science Chapter 8 Erosion and Deposition
What 5 major features can waves create? (25 points) Cliff line----a steep drop caused by the waves wearing away materials Cave---a hole created in a cliff line by erosion Arch---created when the materials around a cliff line are worn away Stack---created as the arch breaks down Stump---what the stack becomes as it is broken down
