NGO CSocD Civil Society Forum 56th Commission FOR Social Development Regional Breakout Groups Through the lens of Social Protection and Poverty Eradication, linking the global level to the grassroots level. Making the connection between the 56th Commission for Social Development, the 2030 Agenda including the SDGs and the High Level Political Forum (HLPF). Participants will learn how this is relevant to leaving no one behind.

4. HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM (HLPF)
The establishment of the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) was mandated in 2012 by the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), "The Future We Want". The format and organizational aspects of the Forum are outlined in General Assembly resolution 67/290.
The Forum meets annually under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the General Assembly for two days.
The Forum’s first meeting was held on 24 September It replaced the Commission on Sustainable Development, which had met annually since
General Assembly resolution 70/299 provides further guidance on the follow- up and review of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
The Forum adopts intergovernmentally negotiated political declarations.

5. High-level Political Forum(HLPF) on Sustainable Development
HLPF has a central role in overseeing a network of follow-up and review processes at the global level
HLPF is also expected to:
Enhance the integration of the three dimensions (social, economic & environmental) of sustainable development;
Provide political leadership, guidance and recommendations on implementation and follow-up;
Promote system-wide coherence and coordination of sustainable development policies; Ensure that the HLPF Agenda remains relevant and ambitious and focuses on the assessment of progress, achievements and challenges faced by developed and developing countries;
Ensure linkages with the follow-up and review arrangements of all relevant UN conferences and processes, including on LDCs, SIDS and LLDCs
Address new and emerging issues;

6. FOLLOW-UP AND REVIEW OF THE 2030 AGENDA AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
As stipulated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the HLPF has a central role in the follow-up and review of the Agenda and its 17 SDGs at the global level, working coherently with the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council and other relevant organs and forums.
There are 17 Goals across the three dimensions of sustainable development (Social, Economic and Environmental) with 169 targets
The meeting of the high-level political forum on sustainable development in 2018 convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council will be held from Monday, 9 July, to Wednesday, 18 July 2018; including the three-day ministerial meeting of the forum from Monday, 16 July, to Wednesday, 18 July 2018.
The theme of the HLPF is “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies” and Goals 6,7,11,12, 15 & 17 will be reviewed.

7. Two types of reviews:
Thematic reviews of progress on the SDGs, including cross-cutting issues – in line with GA resolutions 70/1 and 70/299
Voluntary national reviews (VNRs) - regular reviews, in line with GA resolutions 67/290, 70/1 and 70/299

Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

10. How individuals can get involved & stay connected
You don’t have to live near a UN Centre to be involved!
get involved at the local, national & regional levels…
attend UN meetings (regional/global) when possible,
join UN based networks, organisations (e.g.; HLPF Coordinating Mechanism, the UN Association (UNA), a MGoS)
Join the applicable regional networks and NGO Committee on Social Development (
Groups need to collect data disaggregated by gender, age & demand gender-sensitive budgeting at the local & national level
