2 Who should use this presentation & read the code
Managers of staff, STFC site tenants, and those responsible for contractors on STFC sites whose work involves: altering the fabric of STFC buildings, for example drilling into walls; or whose equipment contains asbestos, for example as thermal insulation

3 STFC Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Group
SHE Code “Asbestos Management” 3

4 Why an Asbestos code? Asbestos accounts for more work related deaths than any other single cause in the UK. In particular for those involved in building or building maintenance trades. Electricians; plumbers; heating engineers; or joiners Requirements of the ‘Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations’, STFC buildings are of an age that asbestos was employed routinely in their construction.

5 Typical asbestos applications
Roof and building cladding Heating system lagging Floor tiles Thermal jackets in old experimental equipment

6 Key points Formalises the appointment of Site Asbestos Control Officers (ACOs): Paul Whitfield DL ext. 3167 Adrian Lewis RAL ext. 5392; Ian Morrison ROE ext. 460; and JBOS SO ext. 3312 Advising on asbestos matters and managing its removal

7 Key points Asbestos surveys required for all STFC sites and checked annually. Site Asbestos Registers required for all STFC sites detailing location and containment of asbestos – including experimental equipment. STFC, and HSE recommended, policy is not to remove asbestos unnecessarily as removing it can be more dangerous than leaving it in place and managing it in situ.

8 Key points All removal and disposal of asbestos must be managed by Asbestos Control Officer (ACO) using certified and licensed contractors. Management & staff to inform ACO & SHE Group where unlabelled/unmarked or loose/unsealed asbestos found or suspected. Those managing work on buildings, Building Work Controllers, must consult site asbestos register prior to undertaking work – informing staff & contractors of asbestos locations. Asbestos Awareness training required for those whose work might bring them into contact with asbestos.

9 SHE Training The training detailed in the code:
