After the death of Christ there was one church. In the 11th century (1000AD) the church split into the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church. Today there are about 41,000 Christian denominations (different Christian churches).
In your journals with the person next to you, create a list of all the different Christian churches you can think of.

2. The Reformation

3. purgatory:
A place between Heaven and Hell where the righteous will pay for their sins before they can be let into the Gates of Heaven.

4. Indulgence:
A way to pay for a remission of your sins. The Pope or "remissioners" would writ your way of passage. Allowed men to skip purgatory. Could pay for those who had already passed on.

5. Why Indulgences?
The Pope wanted to build St. Peter's Church. Needed the funding to do so.

51. Christians are to be taught that the pope would and should wish to give of his own money, even though he had to sell the basilica of St. Peter, to many of those from whom certain hawkers (traveling sellers of goods through shouting) of indulgences cajole (to flatter someone into doing something) money

8. 75. To consider papal indulgences so great that they could absolve (free) a man even if he had done the impossible and had violated the mother of God is madness.
79. To say that the cross emblazoned with the papal coat of arms, and set up by the indulgence preachers is equal in worth to the cross of Christ is blasphemy (speak against God).

Luther refuses and is excommunicated
On his way to prison the Prince of Wittenburg intercepts and hides Luther away

12. The Aftermath
Peasants War: in the name of Luther peasants will rise up against the nobles and merchants with money. Lasts for about 2 years.
Luther is appalled by their actions
Devotes the rest of his life to translating the Bible
The Lutheran church will begin and spread throughout Germany and Scandinavia
