Elements & Compounds
2
ATOM the smallest particle of an element
Elements are the names of atoms
3
Element The name of a specific atom with specific properties
A pure substance that cannot be broken down without extreme measures.
4
Elements: How they are written
Elements are written using their Symbol. A CAPITOL letter alone: H Or a Capitol letter and a lower case letter: He
5
Molecule a particle made of two or more of the same atoms * A particle made up of two or more same compounds
6
Hydrogen + Chlorine = Hydrochloric Acid
Compounds 2 or more different elements combine to make a new substance. H + Cl = HCl Hydrogen + Chlorine = Hydrochloric Acid
7
The new substance is different from both of the original elements.
Na + Cl = NaCl Sodium + Chlorine = Salt (a metal) + (a liquid) = Salt
8
Formula: The Element Symbols put together to represent a new substance
Symbol tells the Element Name. Subscript tells how many of that element.
11
Drawing Compounds We use circles & lines to draw.
12
Mixture Two or more of different elements or compounds that DO NOT combine chemically.
