3
Elements
4
What is an Element? Elements are the basic building blocks of the universe. They can exist as a single atom, or be grouped together to form compounds and mixtures.
5
When you look at an element on the periodic table, this is what you might see.
6
What does all of this mean?
Atomic Number Symbol Atomic Mass Name of the Element
7
The Symbol is what we are most concerned with in 7th Grade
8
Exploring the Periodic Table
Open to page RH2/RH3 in the back of your books (Right after 577) Identify/Write the Symbols on your notes page for the Elements listed.
9
Element Symbols Carbon- C Hydrogen- H Nitrogen- N Oxygen- O
Phosphorus- P Sulfur- S
10
Watch out! They aren’t always one letter
Calcium- Ca Helium- He Sodium- Na Iron- Fe Chromium- Cr Potassium- K
11
Hey, some of those symbols don’t make sense!!!
Some of the elements and symbols are from Latin translation. Example- Potassium (K) is from the latin word for potash, a nutrient rich, water- soluble form of the the element.
12
Atoms An atom is one unit of an element
13
How many atoms of each element do you see?
14
How many Oxygen atoms do you see?
15
Compound What does compound mean? Two or more things put together
So what is a compound in Chemistry? Two or more atoms bonded together, may or may not be different elements.
16
Chemical Bonds Bonds hold atoms/compounds together, they are like magnets. Some magnets are stronger than others, just as some chemical bonds are stronger than others.
17
Which of these are compounds?
18
Glucose is a compound C6H12O6
It contains 6 atoms of Carbon, 12 atoms of Hydrogen, and 6 atoms of Oxygen
19
Mixtures Mixtures are substances that are not bonded.
It may contain a group of atoms that do not bond, a group of compounds, or both.
