To feed the people in their city-states, farmers terraced hilly land and used irrigation to water crops. Where fewer people lived, the Maya used slash-and-burn agriculture to clear land and fertilize crops.

The Mayan Civilization had its beginnings around the year B.C. 2,000. Its earliest origins point to the Yucatan Peninsula of present day Mexico. They really began to show advancement around A.D. 250 in Southern Mexico, through all of Guatemala, present day western Belize, and northwestern Honduras. The Mayans are noted for the first conduit drainage system on the continent and perhaps the discovery of the concept of the zero. The Mayan customs were a huge part of the Mayan culture because they were very set on their beliefs. When a member of one's family died they were buried in simple graves just under their house.
