What is a Battle of the Books?

Originally a radio program sponsored by the Chicago Public Library in the late 1940's, Battle of the Books is a reading motivation program. The goals are to encourage students who enjoy reading and to stimulate an interest in reading in those students who need reinforcement. (It’s a trick to get you to read more!)

Students read books from a selected list
Students read books from a selected list. Then, using a quiz bowl format, battles are held pitting teams of about four students against each other. Context clues are presented and teams earn points by correctly identifying book titles and authors.
