1st Woman describes Lucy Stone as a champion of women’s rights whereas Man refers to her as an “agitator. A disturber of the natural order.” (Lines 22 – 26)
Lucy’s brother Luther embraces the idea the Lucy shouldn’t run faster than a boy, hinting at a larger idea that women shouldn’t outperform men because it’s “not right,” or goes against the natural order (Lines 44-48)
“disturber of the natural order” compared to “it’s not right for a girl to run faster than a boy” both illustrate the conflict that women/girls are not shown equality in the early 1800s.
Aunt Sally believes the only way for a woman to make her way in the world is to marry (Lines 73 – 75)
