What does end of support mean for SQL Server 2008 & 2008 R2?
No security updates Compliance concerns Higher maintenance costs There will be no access to critical security updates, opening the potential for business interruptions As support ends, your organization may fail to meet to meet compliance standards and industry regulations Maintaining legacy servers, firewalls, intrusion systems, etc. gets expensive quickly
4
Security At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2, there will be no more security updates and hotfixes from Microsoft, opening the door to potential business interruptions. Don’t take the risk of losing precious data or having issues with your business applications performance because of potential weaknesses of your environment by not upgrading! Without security updates you may fail to comply with standards and regulations that can seriously hamper your ability to: Protect against hackers, malware with root access to machines, man in the middle scenarios, and government subpoenas Securely purge for customer data, leaving it vulnerable to access by outside parties Utilize E2E data protection across SQL Server and frequently used together services
5
Compliance At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and R2, your system may cease to be compliant with regulatory standards. Failure to be compliant can lead to business complications, penalties and fines across several industries. Regulatory compliance standards may no longer be met at end of support, such as: PCI-DSS for credit card transactions HIPAA for medical patient privacy GLBA for financial institutions GDPR for companies who do business in the EU
6
GDPR enforcement begins May 25, 2018
What is the GDPR? General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a comprehensive new privacy law that gives residents of the European Union (EU) greater control over their “personal data” (which is precisely defined by the GDPR) and requires organizations to maintain appropriate security of personal data. Failure to comply with the GDPR could result in significant penalties. How much can companies be fined for noncompliance? Companies can be fined up to €20m or 4% of annual global turnover, whichever is greater, for failure to meet certain GDPR requirements. When will the GDPR come into effect? The European Parliament approved and adopted the GDPR in April 2016 and enforcement will begin May 25, 2018 GDPR is multinational! When it comes to GDPR compliance, it’s not just European organizations affected, those outside of the EU who process data in connection with the offering of goods and services to, or monitoring the behavior of, EU residents. At the end of support for SQL Server 2008 and R2, your systems may no longer be compliant with upcoming GDPR regulations. GDPR non-compliance can result in fines for organizations who do not adequately protect consumer data. Download the GDPR e-book

Reason over any data, anywhere Security and performance
The MODERN DATA Estate On-premises Private cloud Cloud HYBRID Operational databases Operational databases Before I dive into the specific new features, let’s take a minute to talk about the hybrid data platform we’ve created for your innovation and disruption. What do we mean by hybrid? At its core, the hybrid data platform enables simplicity and common sense: It accepts any data from any source – structured or not, big or small. It functions across on-premises and the public cloud without the divide between them It offers exactly what you need – an operational database, a data warehouse, a data lake and a hybrid integration pipeline across on-prem and cloud To Audience: How many of you have a hybrid environment with data on-prem and cloud? At Microsoft, we know it’s not just about having the right technology, though. It’s about getting technology out of your way so you can use it intuitively to unlock your data and your business. That’s why we’ve taken on the challenge of reimagining the modern data platform. We don’t just build products; we design an interconnected platform that: Enables you to reason over any data anywhere, Gives your flexibility of choice, and Provides industry leading security and performance Throughout the rest of the presentation, I’ll be sharing the most recent changes to our products and services. Let’s get going! Data warehouses Data warehouses Data lakes Data lakes Reason over any data, anywhere Flexibility of choice Security and performance
