1
Nonmetals- noble Gases
2
Group 18- Noble Gas family
Helium- He Argon-Ar Xenon-Xe Neon-Ne Krypton-Kr Radon-Rn
3
Physical properties- Noble Gases
Colorless, odorless Low melting and boiling points Some of the noble gases are lower in density compared to the air, because of their mass Chemical properties- Noble Gases Low chemical reactivity (valence shell full) Chemically stable (does not want to react) Normally do not form compounds (do not bond with other elements) Do not gain, lose, or share e- (valence shell full) Typically Nonflammable
4
States of matter- Noble Gases
Gas state in the natural world (earth and space) Due to low boiling point and low freezing point Atomic Structure- Noble Gases Valence electron shell: e- on the outer shell of the atom 8 valence e-, except He (only 2) Ex. He: p+:2 n:2 e-:2
5
Real World Uses Cryogenic storage
Used as light (Neon lights= low chemical rxns.) Formed into lasers Ventilators (heliox- 80% helium)
