Hello! My name is Ellie Collier and I am EBSCO’s Library Services Engineer for the Northeastern United States and Canada.
I’ll have been with EBSCO for two years this July. Before that I spent about 10 years as a Reference and Instruction Librarian in a variety of academic institutions around the US. I am also one of the co-founders of the Open Access, Open Peer-Reviewed journal, In the Library with the Lead Pipe.

This is the North America LSE Team at an Escape the Room event. My team has grown some since this picture, and our title has changed from Discovery Service Engineer to Library Services Engineer as we move to support more products, but at our core, we’re coming into any situation looking for creative solutions. And today I’ll be showing some of the custom solutions I worked on with the folks up here with me.

4. Brainstorming Confirming use case: research or audio files/scores?
Students want to hear multiple versions of a song
Score or audio
Via API or screenscraping, could check if query has song title results in catalog. If yes:
show a placard directing to the catalog
or show first x results from catalog
Custom Limiter or Radio Buttoms taking advantage of existing code and field codes
TI and SU
Exact phrase
TI and PT
Keyword searching - which fields are searched - would that help with relevancy

6. Custom Limiters
Custom limiter code = well established and supported, but also mutually exclusive, can’t select song title AND another one.

Found a little used field code – IL
Word indexed (doesn’t require exact match)

Mapped to a display field as well (content note)

8. Decision = Drop Down & Custom Limiters
Repurposed code from another team member to add to drop down, but needed to make additional adjustments to make it play nice with the custom limiters. There was a race condition in terms of both codes adding and hiding additional terms to the search query.
My code added a check to see if my Boolean addition was already there so it wouldn’t add it again, which previous version didn’t have.
