Who Am I ?
2
Learning Outcomes – What will I learn today?
I will learn:- What words scientists use to describe living things. What animal cells are like What plant cells are like What the differences are between plant and animal cells
3
How can you tell if something is living?
Working in pairs, write down five ways you might tell if something is alive. Come together with another pair and compare your lists. Report back which ideas were the same and which ideas were different.
4
Seven Characteristics
of Life Movement Respiration Sensitivity Nutrition Excretion Reproduction Growth
5
We can remember this as:-
MRS NERG Movement Respiration Sensitivity Nutrition Excretion Reproduction Growth
6
In order to be classed as alive, an object must do all seven of these things.
Eg. Is this object living? Remember to think about all seven characteristics!
7
Plant and animal Cells In pairs look at the diagrams of the plant and the animal cell. Do you notice any differences? Be prepared to describe them to the class!
8

The Plant Cell Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Permanent Vacuole Nucleus

10
plants and animal cells
Differences between plants and animal cells Copy and complete the table below Part of cell Found in animal cell Found in plant cell Cell nucleus Cell membrane
11
Review – Can I:- List the seven characteristics of living things?
Label an animal cell? Label a plant cell? Describe the differences between plant and animal cells?
12
Learning Outcomes – What will I learn today?
I will learn:- How to use a microscope. How to prepare onion cells for viewing under a microscope Work out magnification Find out about the size of cells
13
The Microscope A microscope is used to make things look bigger.
14
The Microscope Eye piece Lens Focus Knob Stage Mirror/Lamp
15
eye piece magnification x lens magnification
16
Making an Onion Slide
17
How big are cells?
18
Review – Can I:- Label a diagram of a microscope?
Make a slide of onion cells? Use a microscope to look at cells? Work out the magnification of the microscope? Appreciate how small cells really are?
19
Learning Outcomes – What will I learn today?
I will learn:- That cells do different jobs Cells are the right shape for their jobs The names of different cells That cells can work together to build organisms
20
Special Cells for Special Jobs
Some cells have special jobs to do and they have special features which help them to do this. We say they are specialised. Use the following web site to complete the your worksheet:- BBC - Schools - KS3 Bitesize - Science - Biology - Cells
21
Cells work as part of a team
Few cells work by themselves. Similar ones come together to do a particular job. They form a tissue e.g. muscle cells form muscle tissue
22
Different tissues come together to form organs.
Name the organs below:-
23
Organs work together in organ systems, e.g.
Circulatory system Respiratory system
24
Examples circulatory system respiratory system digestive system
nervous system reproductive system excretory system
25
Review – Can I? Name some specialised plant and animal cells?
Describe what makes these cells good at their jobs? Explain what a tissue is and give an example? Give an example of an organ and organ system?
26
Review Summarise what you have learned in this topic in one of the following ways:- Mind map Table List of key words
