Project Overview L689C Stanford Class Design Martin Lee
2
Stanford University Of all of the issues facing higher education at the end of the twentieth century, none is more intriguing and more puzzling than the role of information technology in teaching, learning, and research. Gerhard Casper Case of the University, 1997
3
Education Concern
4
Project Goals The conceptual design of L689C Considering
Expand learning from Academia Purposes to Life-long purposes Learning from most updated resources Learning based on previous knowledge Parallel learning, Domain knowledge + Language/culture Expand learning possibilities by cutting geographical limitation and time issues
5
Class Content? Generalist vs. Specialist Ad hoc curriculum
Core knowledge go deeper Sub material for reference Not memory but access FOR MORE INFO...
6
The same Learning • Work is different ... • Tools are different ...
• Communication is different ... • Information is different ... • People are different ... And Learning Is Different???
7
Is tool itself a learning problem?
A TOOL for educational use. A TOOL that could be shaped to extend the scope of education in knowledge-based economy. A TOOL based on cutting-age technology that would maximize the benefit given by the technology for better learning. A TOOL that address the demand for life-long learning and anywhere anytime learning. A TOOL that could be used by non-technical teachers to perform different subject teaching. A TOOL that does not address any particular problem instead it could satisfy a wide range of educational needs. Design A TOOL that facilitates learning, or design Learning that facilitates the use of a tool?

Who to Believe to? "Don't believe anyone who tells you that web-based education is experimental or untested. The number of web-based learners was recently estimated at 1.6 million!" Source: Kaplan
9
Learning Problems Project based Doing for doing (too engaged in doing)
Weaknesses in Constructivist Facing problem of reconstruction
10
Technology New technology being used Standards being adopted
Correspondence education Standards being adopted Asynchronous WBT Drawbacks & benefits Standards specifically being ignored Value of Real Classrooms
11
Design What is a technology design What is a learning design
Design constraints Design Limitation The users
12
The Standards Movement Addresses What Subjects
Students Should Know from Content Source: ISTE The use of technology as a tool for discovering and applying content knowledge in authentic contexts for: • solving problems • making decisions • exchanging information and • communicating have not been addressed in the content standards.
13
• construct new understandings,
"Knowing content" is not sufficient in itself -- rather, students must apply knowledge to: • construct new understandings, • solve problems • make decisions • develop products and • communicate Technology can facilitate this type of learning Source: ISTE
14
Technology in Schools Many good computers
Little creditable instructional software Mistakes in making assumptions Good technology will be flourished by educators School can produce Commercial quality software
15
Problems How to overcome Skepticism? Theoretical Foundation
Research and References Empirical Data Complete Evaluation How to overcome Resistance? Resistance to Change Resistance to Technology Resistance to any unfamiliar things
16
can provide solutions for better
