The Beginning of the Journey…
Leading Students into the 21st Century Chuck Heinlein, Residential Director As we begin this journey together, we embark upon a mutual jounery, a journey that will take many months to complete, a jouney that should result in the leadership skills and knowledge necessary to create 21st century schools. In this journey, we have the honor of being among the first to embark on such an experience. An as such, we also have the honor to lead the nation in the pursuit of creating 21st century schools. Please know, that you are not alone in this journey. We follow in the footsteps of 75 of your colleagues who began this journey last summer.

As we take this journey together, let me make something very clear at the onset… The staff of the WVDE, the Programmatic Discussion Leaders and the Critical Friends COMMIT to YOU that we will do everything in our power to make this a productive and meaningful experience for you. This Instutute was creatid by the vision of Dr. Paine and the State Board of Education knowing the critical and essential role that principal play in student success. Kathy. This graphic represents the foundation blocks for creating a high performing school systems. High performing High School level schools employ these same elements of systemic improvement. High performing High School schools have four broad components. Turn to page 5 in your High School framework. Let’s talk about the foundation of the High School school, the heart of the High School school, its culture.

Culture: refers to the values, belief systems, norms and ways of thinking, traditions, rituals, stories that are characteristic of the people in the organization as they have worked together to solve problems and meet challenges. It is an underground body of gained knowledge, that is unwritten, that manifests itself in the group behavior norms of the organization. Underneath these behavior norms lie assumptions that comprise the bedrock on which norms and all other aspects of culture are built. These assumptions deal with what the people in the organization accept as true in the world and what is false, what is sensible and what is absurd, what is possible and what is impossible. Assumptions are taken for granted, rarely talked about and are considered non-negotiable. The cultural norms in the organization—informal, unwritten, but highly explicit and powerful in influencing behavior arise from these assumptions. .

A short definition: Culture is the shared philosophies, ideologies, values, assumptions, beliefs, expectations, attitudes and norms that knit a community together. To put it into simple words: It’s the way we do business around here. Or: That’s the way we’ve always done it.
