Presentation on theme: "Run-on sentences."— Presentation transcript:

1 Run-on sentences

2 What is a RO sentence? It occurs when two or more sentences are connected improperly. E.g. 1 It was a beautiful day there was not a cloud in the sky. E.g. 2 I don't play tennis well I have a poor backhand.

3 How do we correct RO sentences?
Linking words & phrases Correction punctuation (NOT commas!) E.g. 1 It was a beautiful day there was not a cloud in the sky. X It was a beautiful day. There was not a cloud in the sky. √ It was a beautiful day; there was not a cloud in the sky. √ It was a beautiful day as there was not a cloud in the sky. √

4 Using a semi-colon (;) Link two independent clauses to connect closely related ideas. When a semicolon is used to join two or more ideas (parts) in a sentence, those ideas are then given equal position or rank. The two clauses in that sentence are separated by a semicolon and could be sentences on their own if you put a period between them instead.
