1.5 Network topologies, protocols and layers
2
Lesson 1 What is a network? Networking Topologies
Be familiar with and can explain the need for computer networks Describe network topologies in particular start & mesh Identify obvious strengths and weaknesses of these topologies
3
What is a computer network?
A computer network is 2 or more computer devices connected together. Benefits of this include: Sharing folders & files Sharing devices such as printers Using s to communicate Control user accounts centrally Distributing software to all devices from central device
4
What is a LAN? Video copyright of OCR - all rights reserver.
5
Can you think of any examples of LAN's? Where can we find them?
6
Networking Topologies
Networks can come in different layouts or topologies. Three common ones are: Has one central cable which devices connect to. Obvious issues with this? Central device send data to others. What happens if central device breaks? Devices are chained together, data is sent to each device until it gets to it target. Comes in lots of different formats, machines are interlinked.

Networking Cable Types
You are going to split into 2 teams and be given a short amount of time to research the difference between copper cables and fibre optic cables. After this time we will have a class debate, the aim of which is to defend your given cable type and discredit the other. You have been provided with some websites to start off your research.

Watch & make notes about: What does P2P stand for? Describe client-server Pro’s & Con’s of each
20
Student Paired/Group Work
Working in groups as instructed by your teacher you need to prepare a 6 minute presentation about P2P and Client-Server networks. Key Questions to cover: Explain the term client-server Explain how a client-server network functions What is the function of the client within a network Explain the term P2P Give two types of devices/resources which can be shared on a P2P network Give 3 advantages and 3 disadvantages of using peer-to-peer networks. P2P networks and connections are usually throttled by internet providers, find out: What does the term “throttled connection” mean? Why do they throttle P2P traffic? Why do they have a bad reputation? Presentation Ideas Paper based - multiple large sheets of paper Powtoon Prezi Pear Deck Video Screen recording using something like paint PowerPoint Google Slides This a research task for students, they can work in groups of 2 or 3 at teacher discretion. Give students a choice on how to present this.

Lesson 4 The Internet & WAN’s
Understand the difference between the internet & the WWW Acknowledge that the internet a worldwide collection of connected networks Understand the uses of IP & MAC Addressing Describe what is meant by: DNS
24
Watch the video & complete the WAN missing words activity
25
Go through the answers as a class
26
The Internet - Intro to protocols
Internet Address Protocol All computers and servers connected to the internet use IP to communicate. Each device on the internet must have its own unique IP address.
27
That bloke from Top Gear(Before they ruined it)
28
How Does DNS work then?
29
MAC Address It is a unique identifier that is assigned to your network interfaces. This simply means that it’s an identifier for your hardware. It is absolutely unique and it will be assigned by the manufacturers of a device. It simply is a label for your device.
30
Packets When two devices want to communicate across a LAN one device will send a message to the other. This message is broken into smaller chunks called packets. These packets are broadcast onto the LAN with the MAC address of the destination device. The destination device will see all of the traffic on the LAN but will only pick up the packets with its own MAC address on them. It’s a bit like getting your luggage back after a flight – you watch all the bags go around on the conveyer belt but you only pick up the one with your name on the label.
31
Packet switching in depth
You send a 3MB file across the internet, we know it is broken up into small chunks called “packets”. Each packet has a “header which contains the following info: IP address it is going to IP it was sent from The sequence number ( i.e 2nd packet ) How many packets in total
32
Student Task Explain the purpose of an IP address
Explain the purpose of an MAC address When data is sent from one computer to another across the internet, the data is split into packets. Give 4 items that will be included in each packet in addition to the data itself. Where would these 4 items be stored within the packet?
33
Student Task: Add definitions for the words shown below
34
Lesson 5 VPN, Hosting & Cloud
the internet as a worldwide collection of computer networks: DNS (Domain Name Server) hosting the cloud the concept of virtual networks.
35
What is a virtual network?
36
How do you make a website? Is it as simple as you think????
Web Hosting How do you make a website? Is it as simple as you think???? Hosting involves storing files and data that you want to make available for access from computers connected to the internet. Websites pages, images and related files Online file hosting - OneDrive, ICloud and others Video hosting such as Youtube Web hosting comes in lots of formats both paid and unpaid services.
37
Student Task Paid and unpaid web hosting services - research online the benefits of paying for web hosting over getting it for free. Things to consider: Which companies offer hosting - find examples How much do they charge? What do you get? Do they all offer similar services for a similar price What's the downside of choosing a free option? Can you host your own website? If yes what is required?
38
Cloud Storage: Who has heard of any of these?
Class discussion with students leading using their existing knowledge.
39
Student Task: CLoud Storage
Tadcastle Senior School has an ageing teaching staff who have a limited understanding of technology, teachers create all of their lesson resources on computers and save these files onto USB memory sticks. However these memory sticks are regularly lost meaning the work has to be redone as it is not backed up, the school's new Head of ICT Mr Bingle has convinced the technicians to invest in cloud storage for all staff. Create a poster that will convince and explain to staff why they should either stop using USB memory sticks or at least back them up online. You will need to include a little info explaining what cloud storage is. Use a blank slide in this document Google Drawing which can be accessed here
