1 NT2640 Unit 1 Activity 1 Handout

2 Review of Encapsulation
9/18/2018 Review of Encapsulation (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

3 Review of Encapsulation
9/18/2018 Review of Encapsulation *Need to verify rights of drawing (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

4 Layer “Encapsulation” Terminology:
9/18/2018 Layer “Encapsulation” Terminology: Application: Protocol Data Unit Presentation: Protocol Data Unit Session layers: Protocol Data Unit Transport layer: Segment Network layer: Packet Data Link layer: Frame Physical layer: Bits (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

5 Encapsulation Process
9/18/2018 Encapsulation Process When a host transmits data across the network, the data undergoes encapsulation Each layer wraps the data with protocol information before being passed to the lower layer – referred to as Protocol Data Units Each layer communicates only with its peer layer on the corresponding node (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

6 De-encapsulation Process
9/18/2018 De-encapsulation Process Each layer receives its portion of the data from the layer before. After the data is processed, the PDU / encapsulation is stripped off and the remaining data is handed up to the next layer. (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

7 9/18/2018 Instructions: Draw a line to connect the item on the left to the appropriate OSI layer. Some items may apply to more than a single OSI layer. Use your textbook as a reference. (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

8 Match the Item to the Layer
TCP UDP LLC 100Base-T IP ARP FTP

9 Match the Item to the Layer
Frame Relay T1/DS1 HDLC Fiber Cable JPEG HTTP MP3

10 Match the Item to the Layer
Switch ICMP ASCII Telnet Hub MAC SMTP

11 Match the Item to the Layer
NETBIOS CSMA/CD Bridge GIF 10Base2 RPC OSPF

12 Match the Item to the Layer
PPP 1000Base-T Multi-Port Repeater DNS Router RIP HTTPS

13 Learning Objective Review the concepts learned in the Activity by performing a Q&A session.

14 9/18/2018 Question 1 What layer of the OSI model is responsible for providing reliable network communications between end nodes? (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

15 9/18/2018 Question 2 What layer of the OSI model is responsible for the routing of IP packets based on the destination IP address in the IP packet? (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

16 9/18/2018 Question 3 What layer of the OSI model defines the electrical, mechanical, and functional specifications for initiating, maintaining, and terminating communications on a physical medium? (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

17 9/18/2018 Question 4 What layer of the OSI model ensures that information sent by the application layer will be formatted properly so that the application layer of another system can read the data? (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.

18 9/18/2018 Question 5 What is the process called that adds headers and trailers to data as it moves from source to destination? (c) ITT Educational Services, Inc.
