What do you know about Native American culture before the colonists arrived? What was their culture like? What do you know about Native American culture after the colonists arrived? What is their culture like today? Think about any books, movies, TV shows, ect. that include a Native American character. How was that character treated?

Watch the clip from Disney’s Peter Pan and respond on your paper to the following prompt in 3-5 sentences: 2. What stereotypes about Native Americans does the clip show? 3. How do you think a Native American person might feel while watching that video? Why?

14 Modern misconceptions
“The stereotypical image of Indians that remains popular in the American mind is that we are superstitious and childlike.” - Vine Deloria, Jr., Standing Rock Sioux “Non-Indians are generally infatuated with the people whom they believe wore loincloths, lived in tepees…Indians today eat Cheerios, drive their cars to the grocery store, live in houses, own dvd’s and watch TV.”

15 Exit Slip: Why Native American Literature?
In your journal, write in response to the following prompts: 4. Has anyone ever had a misconception about you (or someone close to you) because of your race, religion, gender, or culture? Do your best to describe the situation and how you felt afterwards. (Aim for at least 5 sentences) 5. Do you think it’s important for us to study Native American Literature? Why or why not? (Aim for 3-5 sentences) Once you have finished your journal, you may sit quietly, share with a neighbor, or (as long as you raise your hand to ask) pick out a book from my reading corner. Once the bell rings, put your paper into the CP10 tray in front of my desk and you are free to go!  Don’t forget – your syllabus needs to be signed and returned to me by Monday!
