“Lack of Sustainability = Lack of Security and a Serious Safety Risk”
Managing for Sustainable Cities; The Role of Responsible Business & Other Stakeholders Lessons From Class Research “Lack of Sustainability = Lack of Security and a Serious Safety Risk”

“Sustainability”Lessons of Flint for Everyone
Chemical pollution/poisoning is a present concern and genuine risk Of 1.2 million children likely affected, less than half are detected This Scientific American article: thousands of areas in the US are affected by lead poisoning

Sustainable improvement and recovery is slow after disaster, creating its own costly hazards on top of those already evident Flint saved money at first – short term $5M – but already costs to city amount to half a billion. If you aren’t sure of what you’re doing (or don’t want to perform your position/job responsibilities), your city needs an unlimited defense fund.

I Don’t Mean to Be Mean, But
Flint residents were poisoned. Efforts to improve water failed. There were no conclusive reports upon which to take steps. Blame shifting continues until the money runs out for the shuffleboard game.

Lockwood, Andrews and Newman (LAN) failed to implement corrosion control – LAN claims city made decision not to implement. City Blames Governor Veolia tested, didn’t report on levels because they weren’t contracted for that. They were contracted to focus on odor and taste, student research team suspects they were hired for cover up purposes. GM ordered employees to stop using water for any purpose (long ago stopped using Flint River water on aluminum because it was corrosive)

“Good News”, Citizens of Flint
5,2000 of 35,000 lead leached water pipes have now been replaced Your situation and sacrifices led to the testing of other communities around the country. Unfortunately, this. You’re an example of how any single one of us can be vulnerable to seriously “unsustainable” management practice – and how even children can be effective actors in defending their own lives (3500 individuals sued over Flint water crisis and 2400 of them are kids.)
