English II - Advanced Syllabus
Coach Acree-Instructor – School Office, ext 3124 Conference: 2:12-2:57 PM For your convenience, this syllabus is posted on my webpage on the school website at wintersisd.org. You are responsible for knowing and abiding by the Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct. Supplies: Black or blue pens, pencil, class notebook, as well as a vocabulary notebook, 1 box Kleenex, as well as a book to rad. The purpose and goals for English II are to further develop five strands introduced to students in elementary and middle school: Reading, where students read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts; Writing, where students compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail; Research, where students are expected to know how to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information; Listening and Speaking, where students listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and in groups; and Oral and Written Conventions, where students learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing. The cumulative of this effort will be passing the STAAR EOC English II test in March. Winters High School Classroom Rules Look on the back. Consequences Verbal Warning Parent Conference Office Referral Grading Policy 60% Daily Work (Homework, Classwork, Quizzes, Journaling) 40% Assessments (Exams, Projects, Essays, Presentations) If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Cell Phones & Electronic Devices Students are asked to ensure their phones are turned off and never visible to the teacher. If students do not follow the cellphone policy I will pick the phone up and turn it into the office. Parents must come to the WHS Office and pay $15 to repossess the students’ phone. Students may NOT retrieve their phone! Also, if you bring your school-issued device to class, you should never be on it without permission or direction from the teacher. Failure to follow this policy could result in disciplinary action. MAKE-UP WORK & RETAKES For any class missed, the teacher may assign the student make-up work based on the instructional objectives for the subject or course and the needs of the individual student in mastering the essential knowledge and skills or in meeting subject or course requirements. A student will be responsible for obtaining and completing the makeup work for absences. For excused absences the student will be allowed 1 day for every day missed to complete the work missed and 2 calendar days for extracurricular activities. Students with missing assignments will be required to attend after/before school tutorials until all missing work is completed. Student assignments that are turned in 1 day late, without granted permission from the teacher, and no absence has occurred will be assigned a maximum grade of 70. After 2 days the assignment will be assigned a maximum grade of 50. A student is encouraged to speak with his or her teacher if the student knows of an absence ahead of time, including absences for extra-curricular activities, so that the teacher and student may plan any work that can be completed before or shortly after the absence. Please remember the importance of student attendance at school and that, even though absences may be excused or unexcused, all absences account for the 90 percent threshold in regards to the state laws surrounding “attendance for credit or final grade.” Academic Integrity I hold my students to the highest standards and have no tolerance for plagiarizing, cheating or lying. The consequences for such behavior & actions will be severe and in accordance with the Student Code Of Conduct. Attendance & Tardies Attendance is mandatory-if you’re not in school you’re not learning! Please bring a doctor’s excuse or parents’ note to the attendance clerk when you are absent for an excused absence. The WHS Tardy Policy is as follows: 1st Tardy=Detention 2nd Tardy=Detention 3rd Tardy=Lunch Detention 4th + Tardies=1 day ISS/each SOPHOMORES: ENGLISH Ii involves the study of World Literature and further developing literary analysis and writing skills. We WILL spend time in class, daily, developing these skills! THIS CLASS WILL ALSO PROVIDE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO PREPARE FOR PASSING THE STAAR EOC ENGLISH II TEST IN MARCH. “No one will question your integrity if your integrity is not questionable.” —Nathaniel Bronner, Jr. Success is the ONLY option in my classroom!
