Third Grade Measurement
2
Know it...about length! When we are measuring length, we are trying to figure out how long an object is. There are two systems of length that we use to determine length--- the Customary System and the Metric System.
3
Distance from Charlotte to New York Small objects, like a crayon
Customary Length Inch (in.) Foot (ft.) Yard (yd) Mile (mi) Distance from Charlotte to New York person Small objects, like a crayon backyard
4
Customary Conversion Chart
12 inches = 1 foot 36 inches = 1 yard 3 feet = 1 yard 1,760 yards = 1 mile 5,280 feet = 1 mile
5
Know appropriate measures for distances!
Measure small objects using inches, such as erasers and books. If it’s as big as you are, use feet! If it is as big as your backyard, use yards! Miles measures the most distance.. You go far in your car!
6
Metric Length far distances, like from our school to Walmart book
centimeter (cm.) decimeter (dm.) kilometer (km.) meter (m.) far distances, like from our school to Walmart book person tiny objects, like an eye
7
Metric Conversion Chart
10 centimeters = 1 decimeter 100 centimeters = 1 meter 1,000 meters = 1 kilometer Use prefixes to help you remember conversions!
8
Know appropriate measures for distances!
Measure small objects using centimeters, such as erasers and books. If it is as big as your backyard, use meters! Kilometers measures the most distance.. You go far in your car!
9
Know it…about capacity!
Capacity tells the amount a container can hold. Capacity can be measured using measuring cups or measuring spoons. There are 2 systems we use to measure capacity---customary and metric!
10
Know it..about customary capacity!
There are 4 main units of customary capacity! Gallons—Gal Quarts—Qt Pints—Pt Cups--C
11
Use the “Big G” to help with conversions!
CC G Q P Use the “Big G” to help with conversions! 2 cups = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon 8 pints = 1 gallon 16 cups = 1 gallon
12
Know it..about metric capacity!
There are 2 main units of customary capacity! Liter– L Milliliter-- mL A milliliter is about a drop. There are 1,000 milliliters in one liter. 1,000 mL = 1 L
13
Know it…about weight! “How heavy is it?”
We use two systems to measure weight, or mass—Customary and Metric. Scales can be used to measure weight.
14
Know it…about customary weight!
There are two units we use in the customary system of weight. ounces pounds 1 lb = 16 oz.
15
Know it…about metric weight!
There are two units we use in the metric system of weight. grams kilograms 1,000 g= 1 kg kilo= 1,000
16
Ross is 94cm tall. Dee is 37cm taller. How tall in Dee in centimeters?
Strategy- Addition. 94+37 120+11 131 131 centimeters

Paul digs 6 rows of earth to plant vegetables
Paul digs 6 rows of earth to plant vegetables. The rows are 3 meters long. What length of ground has he dug altogether? Strategy-multiplication 6x3 =18 meters
