3. What is a QR code?
A specific matrix barcode, readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and specific types of camera phones.
The information encoded can be text, URL, phone number, SMS message etc.
The code is in the form of an image which can be decoded and read very quickly.
Anyone can use QR Codes, no licence required.

4. About QR codes
 Anyone with a camera phone and a QR Code Reader can read them.
Easy means of getting information to mobile phone users instantly - no need for users to write down information.
Examples of use are: posters, magazines, clothes, buildings, web pages, business cards etc.
Also a means of promoting a response via SMS
some phones scan without clicking, eg HTC Desire using BarCode Scanner reader

5. About the reader
Many Smartphones come with pre-installed QR Code readers.
Various applications available for free download - need to check compatibility – quick to install.
To use, select the code reader software on your mobile phone and point the phone’s camera towards the image.

6. Background and uses
Created in Japan in1994 by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave. Used for tracking parts of vehicles.
In 2007 Pet Shop Boys used a QR code in the artwork for their ‘download only’ single (Integral). The code directed users to their website.
Some airlines and rail networks use QR Codes in the ticketing process - see example.
Lib Democrat MP Martin Tod used QR Codes in the last General Election campaign.
