1 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Notes
DEF- Photosynthesis: process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to make their own food.

2 Capturing Light Energy
Pigments are molecules that absorb light energy. DEF - Chloroplast: organelle in the plant cell that makes food during photosynthesis DEF - Chlorophyll: a green pigment (found in the chloroplasts) that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.  Chlorophyll absorbs most wavelengths of light.  It reflects the green wavelength so the plant looks green.

3 (C6H1206) Making Sugar Light energy is captured by chlorophyll
and used to change CO2 and H2O into a sugar called glucose. Glucose = Simple sugar Glucose contains stored chemical energy Equation for photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O > C6H12O6 +6O2 (C6H1206) light energy Reactants = Carbon Dioxide  Water Products = Glucose Oxygen

4 C6H12O6 + 6O2 ------>6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
Cellular Respiration DEF - Cellular Respiration : the process by which cells use oxygen to produce energy from food.  In the plant cell and animal cell oxygen is used to break down glucose molecules to make energy. Energy is used to make ATP (adenosine triphosphate) Cellular Respiration takes place in the mitochondria Equation for Cellular Respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O >6CO2 + 6H2O + energy reactants products

5 Stoma: opening in a leaf or stem that allows the exchange of gas to occur.
Plants must bring in CO2 for photosynthesis and release O2 produced during photosynthesis

Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration H2O DEF-Process by which a cell captures the energy in sunlight & uses it to
make food. DEF-Cells break down simple food molecules and releases the energy they contain. 1. Captures sun's energy 1. Glucose broken down into
CO2 and H2O and energy is released. Energy 2. Produces sugar (glucose) Chlorophyll - Green pigment found in chloroplasts + O2 CO2 CO2 + C6H12O6 C6H12O6 CO2 + Energy H2O C6H12O6 + O2 Energy O2 H2O
