Let’s Build the Connection
Understanding the relationship between Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
2
Write everything that is in RED
Date: 11/07-11/08 Topic: Intro to Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Learning Target: Describe how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are interrelated.
3
Essential Question Cellular respiration and photosynthesis are the most important chemical reactions on Earth. What would life on Earth be like without one or both processes? Explain.
4
What are we learning today?
Benchmarks: Objectives: I will explain how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are part of an interrelated cycle. SC.912.L.14.7* SC.912.L.18.9*- Explain the interrelated nature of photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
5
Connect the Dots… Why do we need oxygen to breathe and not Carbon Dioxide? So your cells can perform Cellular Respiration! Cellular Respiration
6
Connect the Dots… Cellular Respiration
7
(Carbon Dioxide + Water + Light→ Glucose + Oxygen)
Photosynthesis Purpose: To use sunlight to make glucose (sugar) and oxygen Where: Chloroplasts in Leaves Formula: CO2 + H2O + sunlight → C6H12O (Carbon Dioxide + Water + Light→ Glucose + Oxygen) Which organisms conduct photosynthesis? Autotrophs/ Producers (plants, some bacteria and protists) Importance: allows carbon in the form of a gas to be stored as solid material that can be consumed!
8
Process of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis ABSORBS solar energy (using chlorophyll) and stores it (as chemical energy) Endothermic
9
Cellular Respiration Purpose:
Break down glucose into ATP to release energy Where: Mitochondria (nickname: power house of the cell) Formula: C6H12O6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O + ATP (Glucose + Oxygen→ Carbon Dioxide + Water+ ATP) Which organisms do this process? All living organisms! Importance: allows the cell to use the energy in the food we have eaten
10
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are Interrelated
Energy flow in photosynthesis and cellular respiration is in opposite directions. Photosynthesis “deposits” energy. Cellular respiration “withdraws” energy. Formulas are opposites The products of one are reactants (ingredients) of the other
11
Process of Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration RELEASES and uses the energy (ATP). Exothermic
12
(CO2) (C6H12O6) (H2O) (O2)
