Lesson 3.2 Solving Equations Having Like Terms and Parentheses
Essential Question: How do you solve multi-step equations?

Before we start… You are hosting a birthday party. You buy a cake that costs $35 and decorations that cost $24. You want to have noisemakers and party hats to give to each guest. Each noisemaker costs $0.75 and each party hat costs $1.30. If you only have $100 to spend on the party, how many guests can be invited?

Solving Multi-Step Equations
Continue to use inverse operations to isolate the variable Combining like terms and distributive property will be used

How do I solve a multi-step equation?
Use distributive property and/or combine like terms. Use inverse operations to remove the constant term. Use inverse operations to remove the coefficient.

Solve 3𝑥+8+𝑥=28

Solve 17+3𝑥−11=0

Solve 12𝑥−1−10𝑥=23

Solve 3 6−𝑥 =27

Solve −2 𝑥+7 =16

Solve −40=4 𝑥−10

Solve 5𝑥−2 𝑥−1 =8

Solve 13=2𝑦−3 𝑦+4

Solve 5+2 𝑥−2 =19

Solve 13𝑥− 𝑥+7 =29

Solve 10𝑎+5 2𝑎+1 =65

Solve 10𝑎+5 2𝑎+1 =65

School Spirit Your school’s basketball team is playing in the championship game. For the game, the cheerleaders want to buy a banner that costs $47. They also want to buy small items to give to students in the stands. Pompoms cost $5.20 each. Noisemakers cost $0.80 each. The cheerleaders have a total budget of $375 for the game. If they buy equal numbers of pompoms and noisemakers, how many can they afford to buy?

Reading Competition A bookstore spent $241 to send a group of students to a reading competition. Each student who won was given a $5 gift certificate and a personalized bookmark that cost $2. Included in the $241 was $45 for the salary of a staff member who accompanied the students to the competition. How many students won prizes?

Cell Phones Your cell phone provider charges a monthly fee of $19
Cell Phones Your cell phone provider charges a monthly fee of $19.50 for 200 minutes. You are also charged $0.25 per minute for each minute over 200 minutes. Last month, your bill was $ How many additional minutes did you use last month?
