1 Measuring Tools Measurement Tools Units Length Mass Volume Temperature
(amount of matter) Volume (amount of 3D space) Temperature Time

2 Taking Measurements Steps of Taking a Measurement Length
1. Determine what the hash marks on the equipment mean. 2. Read the measurement. 3. Estimate beyond what you can read so that the last digit in your measurement is an estimate. Usually this is one digit beyond the last you can read. 4. Include the appropriate units from the equipment. Length

3 Practice Measure the lines in cm.

4 Taking Measurements Volume
Meniscus: curve at the top of the liquid caused by the attraction of water to the walls of the cylinder. Always read at the bottom of the meniscus and read at eye level. In some plastic graduated cylinders, the liquid will have a flat surface.

5 Taking Measurements Volume
Practice reading the volumes in the graduated cylinder below:

6 Taking Measurements Volume
Practice reading the volumes in the graduated cylinder below:

7 Uncertainty in Measurement
Accuracy: difference between measurement and an accepted value. Precision: the repeatability of a measurement. Which students are precise and which are accurate if the actual mass is 42.3g? Victoria Lauren Rutesh Shivani 6.3g 18.5g g 42.3g 25.8g 18.7g g 42.2g 48.9g 18.9g g 42.4g
