Welcome to Mrs. Gonsalves’ classroom! Please take You will receive assigned seats next week. Who am I / Name tents Class website / Remind Syllabus and expectations Hand Safety contract Honors Project / Science Fair Chem chat Homework: Sign and return safety contract. Objective: Students will review class procedures and expectations and become familiar with the lab.

Who am I? From New Bedford, live in Fairhaven.
College: UMD Lived in Seattle, WA Teacher for 7 years chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, biology, anatomy, and forensics. Mother yr old daughter. Interests: the periodic table, baking, running, camping, hiking, animals.

What are the rules of this classroom? How will you be treated?
RESPECT Yourself Others Your school Follow handbook rules No food and drink in classroom - WATER okay. Electronic devices / headphones away when in class

What are some procedures?
Entering room Quiet, take seat, put phone away, take materials out, start warm up Follow directions the first time they are given Textbooks – stay in room – return to cabinet Bathroom - sign out and fill out pass Work to bell don’t line up

Make-up work / retakes Late work is not accepted. Test Retakes
Daily classwork / homework is expected to be completed on time. If you are present in class it will not be accepted late. Test Retakes You may retake any test or quiz and your grade will be replaced with the average of the two up to a 75. ONLY if all of the homework has been completed for that unit you have stayed after school or during study to review your errors.

Emergency procedures Lockdown Fire drill - ROOM 214 Safety equipment
I will shut / lock the door and turn off the lights Students in back will close blinds All students will gather in corner under the “Safe spot” sign No using phones or talking Wait until administrator or police officer unlocks door and indicates we are safe to continue with class. Fire drill - ROOM 214 Exit room to right Go down stairs Gather in tennis court, check in for attendance and line up quietly Safety equipment Safety shower Fire extinguisher Eye wash Lab equipment, desks, and sinks

There are 10 stations. You will spend 10 minutes at each station. at each station you must work with a new partner. Objective: Students will review class procedures and expectations and become familiar with the lab.

1. “Both calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate are common house-hold substances. Why should I wear my safety goggles?” Hazards & precations: 1. Calcium chloride is slightly toxic by ingestions. 2. Phenol red is a dye solution that will stain skin and clothing. 3. Avoid contact of all chemicals with skin and eyes. 4. Be careful to mix chemicals in the amounts called for in the procedure. Adding too much may cause splattering or splashing. 5. Wear goggles and aprons, wash hands after cleaning up. Agenda Warm up & attendance, safety contracts. Homework quiz.
