1 Promotion to Full Policies and Practices

2 Criteria to Promotion to Full Professor They shall show evidence of having attained proficiency in teaching, research and creative activity, and service and of superior achievement and recognition in at least one area, and shall give promise of continuing performance at or above such levels. Evaluation of scholarship shall include extramural evaluation.

3 Proficiency All evaluations of personnel shall take into consideration a faculty members annual work plans during the period of review. The word proficient shall be understood to mean having satisfied capably all the special demands or requirements of a particular situation, craft, or profession.

4 Superior Achievement and Recognition having attained distinction, as recognized by ones peers, in a particular situation, craft, or profession

5 Examples of Superiority in Teaching A&S Distinguished Teaching Award University Teaching Award Fulbright teaching award (s) Multicultural Teaching Award Alumni Teaching Award Metroversity Award for Instructional Development Number of total classes, supervision of internships, and independent studies Number of undergraduates/graduate theses, MA committees, and PhD students placed in jobs Assisting undergraduates/graduate students with presentation and publication of research Quantitative evaluations (usually above 4.5 average of all classes taught) Presentation/publication in teaching methodology/pedagogy

6 Examples of Superiority in Research A&S Outstanding Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity Award University Outstanding Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity Award Quantity of books, articles, and other publications, presentations, collections Proclaimed leader in the field in book reviews and by extramural reviewers Selectivity of research outlets Quantity/quality of grant activity (number of applications, acceptances, prestige of grantor) Research fellowships and visiting research appointments at other universities Invited research lectures Election to selective professional societies

7 Examples of Superiority in Service A&S Distinguished Service Award Trustees Award (can also be under teaching category, depending on recipient) Quantity/quality of leadership contributions to department, college, or university Quantity/quality of contributions to professional associations Quantity/quality of community leadership and engagement (public lectures, director of affiliated institution, media interviews, etc.) Faculty award from Disabilities Resource Center Provosts Award for Exemplary Advising

8 Extramural Reviewers Recognized authorities in his or her field who have no bias either for or against the reviewee Excludes: personal friends, former mentors, co- authors, close collaborators In cases where there is a relationship, albeit distant, between the reviewee and a potential extramural reviewer, the reviewee must justify the inclusion of that person on the list of experts.
