1 CHEMISTRY RULES AND ROCEDURES FOR A SAFE LAB EXPERIENCE

2 In a chemistry lab you will have many rules and procedures
In a chemistry lab you will have many rules and procedures. All of them are to be considered important and non negotiable. Students should be well aware of the risk involved in breaking the rules and solid consequences should be clearly established.

3 Follow the rules and learn the procedures to minimize risk.

4 Rule #1: Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times
A chemistry lab can be a cool place to be, but also it can be very dangerous. No clowning will be allowed. A high school students should behave responsibly.

5 Rule #2: eating and/or drinking are not allowed in the laboratory.
We want you alive!! Therefore, eating or drinking are not allowed in the lab area. Do not use laboratory glassware as containers for food or beverages.

6 Rule #3: Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor.
Never do anything in the laboratory that is not called for in the laboratory procedures or by your instructor. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited.

7 Rule #4: LEG AND FEET NEED PROTECTION
Bare feet or any type of open shoe or sandal can not be worn into the chemistry laboratory. Likewise, short pants and skirts are also not permitted. It is recommended that you don't wear your best clothes to lab.

8 Rule #5: THROW AWAY CRACKED OR CHIPPED GLASSWARE IMMEDIATELY
Glassware must be placed in the special trashcan labeled BROKEN GLASS ONLY.

9 RULE #6: Never fool around in the laboratory
Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited.

10 Rule #7: Observe good housekeeping practices
Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all times.

11 Rule #8: Labels and instructions
Labels and equipment instructions must be read carefully before use.

12 Rule #9: wear your goggles
Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used, students will wear laboratory goggles. There will be no exceptions to this rule!

13 Rule #10: dress properly during a laboratory activity.
Long hair, dangling jewelry, and loose or baggy clothing are a hazard in the laboratory. Long hair must be tied back and dangling jewelry and loose or baggy clothing must be secured.

14 rule #11: Know your lab equipment and how to use it
If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask the instructor for help.

15 Rule #12: do not snIff chemicals
Chemicals should never be sniffed. Follow the right procedures.

16 Rule #13: Always wear your lab coat
Lab coat should be worn all the time in the lab area.

18 Procedure #1: Put on goggles and lab coat
When entering the Lab Area, you would find a cabinet with these labels on: Open it and take one pair of goggles and a lab coat, put them on and continue to the lab.

19 Procedure #2: If a chemical splashes in your eye(s) or on your skin
Immediately flush with running water from the eyewash station or safety shower for at least 20 minutes. Notify the instructor immediately.

20 Procedure #3: Acids must be handled with extreme care.
You will be shown the proper method for diluting strong acids. Always add acid to water, swirl or stir the solution and be careful of the heat produced, particularly with sulfuric acid.

21 Procedure #4: Know your lab equipment and how to use it
The use of equipment will be modeled to you. If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask the instructor for help.

22 Procedure #5: how to know the smell of your chemicals
Place the container about six inches from your nose and, using your free hand, wave the vapors toward your nose.

23 Procedure #6: how to use a fire extinguisher
