2. Supplies information. 3. Allows us to expand our experience. 4. Shows us the images we learn to accept as normal. 5. Persuades us to buy products. 6. Entertains the audience-media “sponsors” – paid advertisements.

18 Target Audience The way we view things is affected by friends, family, age… Try to make you react.

19 The Truman Show conveys this message by depicting a series of fateful events in the life of Truman Burbank, who has grown up, and lives, in a fake town full of actors. The town is enclosed in a giant dome decked out with high-tech simulations of sun and sky, in which the rain and wind are courtesy of the special effects department. Truman alone has no idea he is in a giant TV studio, as the rest of humanity watches him go from one staged situation to another in a nonstop telethon of reality programming that lets audiences enjoy a little pathos and vicarious emotion.

20 Manipulation Death of his father
Plays on his fear of water-every time Truman wants to leave obstacles are in his way. EX: business across the water fire on the highway Traffic congestion Explanation on the radio about a satellite falling from the sky. Pulled his father away His love interest in not the correct one. The elevator crash.

21 “We accept the reality of the world that is presented to us.”
You were outraged, the audience applauded but who has the control? They audience could have turned off the TV. The audience in the end cheers him on.

22 Product Invention Convention
You must design the product in your mind. It is not necessary to actually construct it. Use your imagination. You need to advertise your product and convince a judging panel. You must introduce your product. You must include a slogan, at least two weasel words and at least one advertising strategy. Appropriate length of time is 2-3 minutes. Your ad must be eye-catching, creative, and appealing.

23 Is Life Without TV Possible
Is Life Without TV Possible? The Swansons are a family of four who watch more TV than they would like to admit. Normally, with two televisions in their home, it's not a problem. Recently, though, their second television broke and now they have just one. James, the father, enjoys watching the news and sports, especially baseball. Susan, the mother, likes solving the latest Poirot mystery and following dramas like E.R. and Law and Order. Their daughter, Emily, enjoys learning about animals from faraway places on the Animal Planet channel and watching old cartoons like Scooby Doo. Her brother, Tyler, like his dad, likes sports, but unlike his dad he doesn't like watching baseball. He prefers watching basketball and football instead. Tyler also likes sitcoms like Friends. As you might imagine, after their second TV broke, it wasn't easy for the Swansons to agree on what to watch. That is, until they found a program called The 1900 House. The 1900 House is one of the latest examples of a new trend in television called reality shows. Reality shows are about normal people placed in extraordinary situations. The 1900 House is about a modern family of six who must live in a Victorian house just the way families had to back in This, of course, means life without television. The Swansons, with their one TV, can't imagine what that must be like. Now they can't stop watching trying to find out!

Why or why not? -To what extent does the commercial reflect your own values, opinions and/or attitudes? -How might the commercial influence viewers to consider, question or act on the political or social themes presented?

27 WRAP-UP/HOMEWORK: Individually, students keep a log during a 30- minute television show of their choice, chronicling the commercials that air, and then write a short paper analyzing how these commercials relate to the program, the product or service, as well as the show’s intended audience and the advertiser’s target consumer.
