The Rise of Andrew Jackson Big question: How did Andrew Jackson become a symbol of rising democracy? Define Jacksonian democracy. Identify two ways in which the people gained more power in voting. What was the difference in election participation from the early 1800s to 1840? Who won the popular vote in 1824? Who won the electoral vote and presidency in 1824? Describe the “corrupt bargain”. What did the president focus on from ? Define spoils system.

Indian Removal What were the effects/benefits to America after victories in the Creek War of 1814 and Seminole War of 1818? When Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama tried to seize Indian lands, what was the result? Define Indian Removal Act. What was the Indian response to the Indian Removal Act? How many Cherokees were forced west? How many died on the Trail of Tears?

Nullification Crisis Define protective tariff.
Which side like protective tariffs: North or South? Who opposed Jackson and the new tariff? Define nullification. What did Jackson do in response to the negativity of the “Tariff of Abominations”? Which state threated to leave the US over the tariff? What two things happened in 1833 regarding the tariff?

Economic Woes How did President Jackson view the National Bank?
Jackson vetoed renewing the national bank. What did his critics call him? What new political party formed? What happened to the economy as Jackson tried to destroy the bank? Who became president after Andrew Jackson? What was the immediate impact of the Panic of 1837? William Henry Harrison won the presidency in 1840 but quickly died. What did John Tyler restore as part of Whig party principles?
