The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land No state can take action against it Issues between the states are settled in Federal Courts Powers are divided and shared between the states and the national government What is the principle of federalism

4 FEDERALISTS WANTED A STRONG NATIONAL GOV’T BC THE AOC WAS SO WEAK AND SET THE U.S. UP FOR FAILURE Alexander Hamilton - wanted more than what was stated in the Constitution. Used “ necessary and proper” clause to say it was necessary and proper to have a National Bank to develop the economy James Madison- “Father of the Constitution” helped to write federalist papers; wrote the 10 Amendments to compromise with the Anti Federalists

Fought to get away from strong central gov’t Constitution should protect individual rights Patrick Henry – hated idea of strong central gov’t. refused to attend Philadelphia Convention George Mason, leader of anti federalists, wanted to restrict power of central gov’t and supported protection of individual rights

The House of Representatives= 435 – VA Plan ( Big State Plan) 6 delegates from DC and U.S. island territories

9 Checks and balances Separation of Powers to keep one branch from having too much power!! HOR & Senate pass a bill >>> Prez can check by veto>>> Congress can check Prez by overriding the veto by 2/3 votes>> Courts check Prez by challenging constitutionality of laws.

10 The New Government Protected personal freedoms of its CITIZENS
Showed the world that its possible to change government to discussion and choice instead of chaos, force and war
