The Great Compromiser Henry Clay - Tariff of lowed rates over 10 yrs. Force Bill - allowed the President to use force in order to collect federal tariff duties

Cherokee took many steps to assimilate 1828- Georgia refused to recognize the Cherokee sovereignty —although the Supreme Court upheld their appeal A.J. wanted Cherokee removed 1830 – Indian Removal Act uprooted over 100,000 Na. Am. to West In Florida, the Seminole Wars under Osceola took over 1,500 Am. lives—many fled into the Everglades In 1838, 15,000 Cherokees were forced to Oklahoma. Over 4,000 died on the Trail of Tears

4 THE BANK WAR Jackson felt the Bank of the United States was a monopoly by controlling the nation’s money supply by issuing it’s own bank notes The President of the Bank of the U.S. was arrogant Nicholas Biddle The Bank’s charter was set to expire in 1836, but the issue of its renewal surfaced in the election of 1832 by Clay—A.J.’s opponent Jackson vetoed the bill showing the power of the executive branch - not because it was unconstitutional, but in the best interest of the country, thus overriding Congress

5 THE ELECTION OF 1832 Jackson ran against Henry Clay and a new 3rd party—the Anti-Masonic Party – A third party designed to stop the secret Masonic order and its power over politics Clay, backed by the Bank of the United States, used wealthy campaign funds yet Jackson easily won reelection

6 THE BANK GETS BURIED With a mandate from the voters (but against his advisors), Jackson removed all federal fundings from the Bank The federal funds were distrubuted to “pet banks” in various states which in turn started printing their own paper money at a rampant pace—thus forming the foundation of a large financial crisis – one that Jackson would not be in office to try to fix Before leaving office, Jackson signed Specie circular – western land must be purchased in metallic money Nevertheless, Jackson left office very popular
