In 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 35

April 4, 1968: while standing on the balcony of his motel in Memphis, Tennessee, he was assassinated. He was only 39 years old. Shot by James Earl Gray, a former convict. He was sentenced to 99 years in prison and died in jail in 1998.
