Plant Systems Systems in Plants 4.1 Systems in plants
2
Description of Plants Roots hold the plant in place
Green due to the chlorophyll pigment Cannot move from place to place because they do not need to move around in search of food they do not need complex and coordinated organ system as found in animals.
3
Body Systems There are two main systems in plants:
Shoot System (flower, leaf, fruit, main stem) Root System
4
Plants have similar functions as animals in order to survive:
Plants perform photosynthesis to make their own food. Plants have similar functions as animals in order to survive: The ability to exchange gases with their surroundings. An internal transportation system to move water and nutrients around within their bodies. A way of reproducing.
5
Hierarchy of Organization in the Plant Body
6
Plant parts are made up of a variety of spiecalized tissues:
Dermal- the tissues covering the outer surface of the plant. Vascular- the tissues responsible for conducting materials within a plant. Ground- all plant tissues other than those that make up the dermal and vascular tissue systems
7
Root System The root system is the part of the plant that typically grows below ground. This system performs three functions: anchors the plant absorbs water and minerals stores food.
8
Shoot System The system in a flowering plant, fern, or conifer that is
specialized to: conduct photosynthesis reproduce sexually: The system consists of the leaf, flower, and stem.
9
The Leaf Main photosynthetic structure of the plant
Converts CO2, H2O and light energy into sugar (glucose) and O2 The glucose produced is used for growth, cellular respiration and storage. The organelle that performs photosynthesis is the chloroplast
10
The Flower Developed for sexual reproduction.
Contain both male and female structures Eggs (F) are fertilized by pollen (M) After pollination the female flower parts form seeds Seeds are contained within a specialized structure called a fruit Animals and wind help with pollination

The Stem Support branches, leaves, and flowers
Provide a way to transport materials Contain vascular tissue for carrying substances to and from roots, leaves, flowers, and fruits Bill Nye - Plants
