UNIT 1: FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE (LITERARY DEVICES) Measured by: Focus Notes, quiz, discussion, project, presentation & usage allusion A reference to a historical event, person, object, etc. (most are biblical or mythological references) 2. ambiguity A subtle hint or fact left intentionally unclear; vague 3. analogy Comparing/describing one concept with another similar object or story – an illustration, similar example 4. apostrophe an arrangement of words addressing a non-existent person or an abstract idea in such a way as if it were present and capable of understanding feelings 5. character a person in a work of fiction 6. characterization the creation or construction of a fictional character. 7. conflict a condition in which a character experiences a clash of opposing wishes or needs. 8. dialogue conversation between two or more people as a feature of a work of fiction. 9. diction the choice and use of words and phrases in a work of fiction 10. euphemism To substitute for a less harsh, less offensive word 11. foreshadowing Hinting; clue at what might happen in the future in a work of fiction 12. genre categories characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. 13. hyperbole Exaggeration on purpose 14. idiom An expression that is not interpreted literally. 15. imagery words that describe what one may see, touch, feel, taste, or smell 16. irony Situational Irony- opposite of expected; Verbal Irony- sarcasm ; Dramatic Irony- character unaware. 17. metaphor Figuratively saying one thing “IS/was” another; comparison of two unlike objects to create an effect on perception 18. mood the atmosphere or pervading tone of something, especially a work of art. 19. onomatopoeia Sound words (slam, screech, bang, blam, pow, roar, growl)
