U.S. won independence from Britain in 1783, at the end of the war Mississippi River was the boundary of the new Republic. As the country grew land-hungry newcomers pushed the borders beyond the Mississippi, the gov’t helped them by acquiring new territory for settlement. Louisiana Purchase 1819 – Spain gave up Florida 1846 – GB gave up Oregon Terr.

Many Americans believed in Manifest Destiny – idea that the United States had the right and duty to rule North America from Atlantic to Pacific TPS Was Manifest Destiny a good or a bad thing? Why TPS At the same time tensions between Northern and Southern states over the issues of states’ rights and slavery continued to grow and threatened to reach a boiling point. Create a timeline with your group on the following three things
Important Civil War Events (i.e Abraham Lincoln becomes president), Territories acquired by the United States, and new inventions or ideas in science/medicine in the 19th century. Use Ch. 26 Sections 3 & 4 to help you out (copy all vocab into LL) Color code the different events Include 10 events of each, with a minimum of 5 hand drawn/colored pictures per category Include an annotation (2-4 sentences explaining the timeline item) for every timeline item Make it an appropriate scale, space it out evenly, cleanly
