2 Direct Characterization

3 Indirect Characterization
an aspect of a character the author does not say outright, but implies “He looked the boy up and down as if he had never seen a child before and wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do with one: eat it, ignore it, or kick it down the stairs” What do we know about this man, based on how he’s described here?

4 Find your 2 o’clock Partner
Read through the different examples of indirect characterization and write down what you can infer about each character. 5 minutes

5 Turn and talk to someone at your table group:
Why do you think John Boyne make the protagonist of his “fable” a 9-year-old boy? What about using a child as a main character makes this time period more approachable?

6 Writing exercise: write a short fiction story about one of the historical events below. Your protagonist should be a 9-year old child: American 1920’s American Great Depression WWI The atomic bomb
